What Cat Owners Can Learn About Captivity

I’ve heard about environmental enrichment for cats—what exactly is this?

Environmental enrichment can be defined as enhancing the health and welfare of captive animals by modifying their environment.¹ While cats are not commonly considered to be captive animals, many cats (and dogs) in North America are housed exclusively indoors, effectively living in captivity much like zoo animals.

Zoo animal health and welfare have improved dramatically through environmental enrichment, which can be applied successfully to the care of indoor cats. Environmental enrichment lowers the incidence of what are called sickness behaviors in laboratory and clinical trials of healthy cats and in cats with feline idiopathic cystitis.^2,3

What are Sickness Behaviors?

Sickness behaviors refer to a group of nonspecific clinical and behavioral signs that include varying combinations of^4,5:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Anorexia or decreased food and water intake
Elimination outside the litter box
Fever
Lethargy
Somnolence
Enhanced pain-like behavior
Decreased general and body care activities (grooming)
Decreased social interactions

Sickness behaviors result from a change in an animal’s motivation from normal interaction with the environment to one that inhibits metabolically expensive activities (eg, foraging) in favor of behaviors that promote recovery. These are well-documented physiologic and behavioral responses to infection found in all animal species studied and also occur in response to aversive environmental events.⁶Psychological stressors—threats to perception of control and predictability—have recently been linked to immune activation and proinflammatory cytokine release, as well as to changes in mood and pathologic pain.^7-9

Thus, sickness behaviors can result from both peripheral and central pathways. In contrast to more commonly recognized structural abnormalities, functional problems like sickness behaviors tend to wax and wane in response to changes in environmental circumstances.

Basic Resources

Although comprehensive recommendations for environmental enrichment for indoor cats have been published, the basic approach is straightforward.^10-13Ensure that all cats in the household have unrestricted access to basic resources and as much control and predictability of the environment as possible. Basic resources include:

Provision of a food container (bowl or foraging device), water source, and litter box in a safe, low-traffic area
Accessible materials that can be scratched and climbed on (cats are the most 3-dimensional mammal humans commonly interact with)
Uninterrupted rest areas
Opportunities to play and interact with other animals, including humans, on the cat’s terms

In multiple-cat households, pay special attention to the prevention of resource guarding (by ensuring plenty of everything) and to the quality of interactions between cats, which is essential to the health and welfare of all concerned.¹⁴

THE 6 ENRICHMENT CATEGORIES

1. Basic Resources—Food, Water, Elimination
Factors to consider for the 3 basic resources include location, type of resource, and how changes to each resource are made. Cats are prey as well as predator, so they feel most vulnerable and are most likely to become frightened while eating, drinking, or eliminating. To avoid this reaction, basic resources should be placed away from machinery that can start up unexpectedly or locations where cats may be startled or feel trapped. The type of basic resource can vary—dry versus canned food, still versus running water, features of the litter box, and type of litter all are worthy of consideration.

When considering changes in basic resources, the guiding principle is, “First ask the owner, then ask the cat.” Implementing an idea that owners do not like or approve can risk damaging their relationship with the cat or affecting the cat’s quality of life. After the owners have agreed with the idea, then “ask the cat” by offering the new resource next to the familiar resource and letting the cat demonstrate its preference.

2. Structural Features
Structural features are environmental elements that permit a cat to scratch, climb, and rest in approved areas as well as enjoy places where it can hide without risking forced removal by another animal or person. Once owners understand that scratching and climbing are natural, species-typical feline behaviors that can occur without damaging the owner’s cherished possessions and that cats prefer to interact with others in their environment on their own terms, structural features that meet the needs of pet and owner can be provided (for examples, see the Household Resource Checklist).

3. Social Interactions
The social structure of cats differs from that of humans and most other animals with which we come in regular contact in that cats can be reticent to permit others to join their group. As a consequence, intercat aggression reportedly is the most common form of feline aggression in multiple-cat homes. Although beyond the scope of this article, recommendations for this problem are available.^12,14

Enrichment should be discussed with clients and implemented at the earliest age possible. The goal of early introduction is to shape the attitudes and behaviors of the client toward understanding the importance of addressing the cat’s needs to ensure the pet’s best possible welfare and health. Additional discussions with cat owners before they introduce new elements into the environment may help avoid changes in the perception of control as well as predictability that inevitably attends change.}

4. Human Interactions
Structured interactions with the owner, such as departure and return rituals, play interactions, and grooming, can help an anxious cat overcome owner absences by imitating brief rituals of interactions (eg, petting, treats) that signal the owner’s departure and return.

Play interactions can be based on the prey preferences of individual cats, such as toys that simulate birds (feather on a wand), insects (piece of dry food or laser pointer), or small rodents (many choices available). Some cats prefer to be petted and groomed rather than participate in play activities, which can be enriching as long as the activity begins and ends on the cat’s schedule.

5. Audio-Visual Enrichment
Audio-visual enrichment can include ambient sounds associated with the owner’s presence, such as a radio being played, and access to windows (maybe with a bird feeder in view), television, or a fish tank, depending on the cat’s preference.

6. Olfactory Stimulation
Olfactory stimulation can include herbs, such as valerian or catnip, or synthetic feline pheromones (feliway.com).

CLIENT EDUCATION
With new clients, I review the 6 enrichment categories, taking every opportunity to praise the client about the current situation as often as possible. If gaps are found, I offer alternate enrichment approaches that have worked for other owners and may also work for them or may stimulate their thinking about variations that might be more appropriate for their cat. I try to create a setting where owners choose the forms of enrichment they want to implement; they are more likely than I am to be familiar with what will and will not work in their particular situation, and they will have to expend the time, money, and effort to implement the recommendation. Once the choice is made, more specific suggestions can be made based on experience. Owners sometimes receive enrichment recommendations defensively, particularly when they believe they already are “good owners.” In these situations, empathically exploring the owners’ concerns, clarifying one’s agreement that they are acting in good faith, and asking for their ideas about what might help are generally useful.

Meet Misty Paws: this sweet senior cat needs a loving home
(and some dental care!)

Misty Paws' story is a sad one. At 13 years old she was surrendered by her owners due to the fact that they are moving and also the cost of her much needed dental. This old tortoiseshell girl is currently in a temporary foster home but cannot stay for much longer. As she has never lived with other cats before it would be better if she was the only one in a home. She has not adjusted yet to the other cats in her foster home but there are three of them so she is overwhelmed. Misty Paws' world has been turned upside down and she has no idea where she is and why.

In order to help her chances of finding a permanent home or even a long term foster home, her dental issues need to be addressed.

Lost 5 Years, a Colorado Cat Finds Her Way to Manhattan

A calico cat named Willow, who disappeared from a home near the Rocky Mountains five years ago, was found on Wednesday on a Manhattan street and will soon be returned to her family, where two of the three children and one of the two dogs may remember her.

A man discovered Willow on East 20th Street on Wednesday and took her to a shelter.

How she got to New York, more than 1,800 miles away, and the kind of life she lived in the city are mysteries.

But thanks to a microchip that was implanted when she was a kitten, Willow will be reunited in Boulder, Colo., with her owners, the Squireses, who had long ago given up hope.

“There are tons of coyotes around here, and owls,” Jamie Squires said. “We put out the ‘lost cat’ posters and the Craigslist thing, but we actually thought she’d been eaten by coyotes.”

Ms. Squires said she and her husband, Chris, were shocked when they received a call about Willow on Wednesday from Animal Care and Control, which runs New York City’s animal rescue and shelter system. Ms. Squires said that when they saw a picture of the cat, they knew it was Willow.

Willow was found on East 20th Street by a man who took her to a shelter, and Julie Bank, executive director of Animal Care, said the microchip led to the Squires family.

“All our pets are microchipped,” Ms. Squires said. “If I could microchip my kids, I would.”

The Squires children are 17, 10 and 3, and they have a yellow Labrador named Roscoe, who knew Willow, and an English mastiff named Zoe.

Ms. Squires said Willow escaped in late 2006 or early 2007 when contractors left a door open during a home renovation.

Ms. Bank said Willow was healthy and well-mannered, and probably had not spent her life on the streets of Manhattan.

Animal Care and the Squireses were trying to arrange for transportation back to Colorado. In the interim, Willow may stay with a foster family in New York.

“The kids can’t wait to see her,” Ms. Squires said. “And we still have her little Christmas stocking.”

Make Your Own Kitty Litter

My cat is very patient when it comes to changes in her kitty litter. I don’t even have to do the thing where you add a percentage of the new litter to the old litter and up the percentage until you’ve totally switched over. Whatever I put in the litter box, she’ll use. So I’ve been testing out a lot of different natural kitty litters, and honestly, I don’t like most of them.

I’ve read horrible things about the chemicals that go into conventional clumping litters and the damaging effects of clay mining on the environment, so I’m not about to go back to clay litter. I like Feline Pine pellet litter, but we moved the kitty litter into the bathroom recently, and I’ve noticed that the cat kicks the pellets out of the box constantly. The pellets are too big for my little Dirt Devil to pick up, so I have to haul out the big vacuum every day, and I just don’t have the patience for that.

I came across a couple of litters made from recycled newspaper, but the cheapskate in me couldn’t justify paying for recycled newspaper when I have plenty of my own.

I started out using newspaper shredded in my paper shredder, but there were two problems.

I didn’t like the idea of the ink getting on my cat’s paws. It just didn’t seem healthy.
She tracked strips of paper everywhere like she was constantly throwing a kitty ticker tape parade.

So after a week or so of brainstorming, I came up with this recipe for homemade kitty litter.

Shred newspaper in a paper shredder. I collect the shredded paper in an unused litter box.
Soak the paper in warm water mixed with a few squirts gentle, biodegradable dish soap (like Ecover). The shredded paper takes on a cooked oatmeal consistency. The paper won’t come completely clean, but the water will turn grey.
Drain the water (an old colander works wonders) and repeat the soaking process minus the soap.
Sprinkle baking soda liberally on the wet paper. Knead it in to the mixture (you might want to wear gloves to avoid getting ink on your hands).
Squeeze the remaining moisture out until it’s as dry as you can get it.
Crumble over a screen and leave to dry (it takes a few days).

Once it’s dry, I put about an inch and a half to two inches of the paper crumbles in the litter box, scoop solids daily and change it once a week. It takes about a half an hour to 45 minutes to make a 2-3 week supply of litter, and it’s kind of fun, in an elementary school art project way.

With the exception of a few cents worth of baking soda, it’s free. I use the circular newspapers and Pennysavers (make sure to remove staples) that come to our house. The baking soda does a good job of controlling odor, and it doesn’t track very much. I think it actually works better than most of the store bought products I’ve tried.

Once the temperatures are no longer arctic here, I plan to do this outside and use the wastewater to water my lawn.

Yesterday was a sad day...Brady left us after being in our lives for 19 years. He was a cat that started out with me and ended up with my Mom and Dad and lived a long, happy life with them under the best possible care. His beginning wasn't a good one but he lived out his days in the sanctuary of their home. We all have heavy hearts today remembering and missing him.

I've started doing this recently. We've been using the wood pellets for over a year now (I like them the best because they are cheap (about $6/bag) but most importantly they don't track litter around the box or the house!!! Having a kitty in kidney failure that not only gets sub-q fluids twice a day but also drinks a lot of water causes a lot of traffic in the litter box. We found that we were filling up our weekly garbage bin quickly by tossing this in the trash so started a compost pile next to the garage in the back alley. We separate the urine from the solids and we toss the solids down the toilet or in a garbage bag. I thought it would be safer that way. I'm not sure we will use this in the garden but I don't see why we won't be putting it around the perennials next spring.
I looked a lot online when I wanted to start this for information but there really wasn't any. I came across this article today. Check it out.

His owner, Sharon Flood, taught her furry proteg‚ how to walk across a selection of non-toxic water-colours after she noticed his muddy paw-prints on her glass table!

Worth a thousand words
Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics, written by Heather Busch and Burton Silver, is an international bestseller which accounts for the current craze in cat creativity. Brace yourself! In addition to exploring the history, theory and practice of feline art, the book contains startling photographs of paint-splattered cats at work on their colourful projects. According to the authors, couch scratching and mouse baiting are also legitimate means of artistic expression!

Here's the scoop...
Can all cats paint? No. Although 60 per cent of domestic cats will mark territory (ie, your leather couch), only 0.001 per cent will need a beret and palette. Don't despair - Morris may become the next Matisse with a little encouragement!
Which breeds are artistically inclined? Cats which don't mind getting their paws wet, such as Birmans, might be more likely to paint.
How can I tell if my furrball has talent? Observe your cat. Does she contem-plate the marks she makes in her litter box? Are the lines curved or aesthetic? Does she scratch the wall with litter left on her paws? Does she attack your furniture in one spot, as if creating a work in progress? Does she take pride in arranging her prey or parts of it? Does she like to play and create pat-terns with her kibble? Does she watch television and recognize other animals on the two-dimensional screen? Will she sniff out a cat food advertisement in Cat Fancy magazine? Does she make territorial claw marks on trees? Does she show interest if you mark the same places she does? Yes, that's an odd concept! (Each 'yea' is worth 10 per cent. Six 'yays' gives Puss a 60 per cent chance of dabbling in the fine arts!)
How can I encourage my cat to paint? To get your kitty's creative juices flowing, leave a saucer of non-toxic, scented acrylic paint (room temperature) near her litter box with an absorbent sheet of smooth board. Mix a few drops of urine in the paint to encourage marking behaviour. The moment Fluffy manipulates the paint, she's making her first artistic gesture!

Artistic licence
The jury is still out as to why some cats paint. Is Puss trying to represent an object or emotional state? Does she need to explore her inner feelings? Is she communicating with us or another cat? Or, as many sceptics believe, is she simply marking her territory in a flamboyant fashion? The medium contains a mysterious message...

The Philip Wood Gallery

When the Philip Wood Gallery in Berkeley, California opened its doors in the fall of 1994 it had on show the first international exhibition of paintings and works created by cats - complete with Artist in Residence, Buster.
Gallery owner Philip Wood was keen to reverse the blinkered view held by most scientists and art historians which had determined that the marks that cats had been making with paint and other media for centuries were territorially motivated rather than having any aesthetic intent.
Philip Wood co-opted the assistance of leading cat-art expert Heather Busch to both curate the exhibition and to be on hand to answer the many questions which they knew would be raised. The show was an instant success, several visitors even turned up with their cats to get first hand advice regarding painting techniques and to present their cats with positive role models.
The Gallery, which is situated on the corner of Solano and Modoc, is open on weekends until the end of 1995 when the exhibit will travel to Europe. Some merchandise is available at the Gallery, including a Limited Edition Print of "Beam Me Up" a famous piece of work by world renowned cat artist, Orangello.

Why do cats paint? Apparently, it has to do with marking territory, and with the fact that acrylic paint smells a little like cat urine. Not all kitties do it. In fact, only a very small percentage seem to have artistic aspirations. But the ones that do put paw to canvas can command top dollar for their work. If you think your cat's got what it takes, you can buy a test to measure its creativity. Who knows? That little guy that climbs your drapes could be the next Picatsso.

Tips For Renting With Pets

From Apartment Therapy:

Stick with Pet-Friendly Places. This is by and large the best way to move with pets. Search out pet friendly apartments in your new area and then the rest of this list will be null and void for you. Working with like-minded animal lovers is gonna be your least stressful and best option.

Contact Humane Societies. Humane societies, vets and animal control are all great references for finding out what places in your area are pet-friendly.

Even though finding a pet-friendly place would be the most ideal situation it's not always available or realistic. So the rest of this list focuses on what to do everywhere else.

Stay Away from Large Rental Communities. It's much easier to persuade an individual home or condo owner into allowing pets than a big corporate community, when they say "no pets" they mean "no pets".

Ask First. If you're playing around with the idea of getting an animal or you have a friend or significant other with a pet who might move in with you in the future, make sure to ask about the pet rules straight away so you know options are available to you in the future.

Be Honest. The landlord will find out if you have a pet, or that you have more than you told them, so just come out with it right away. That way you will not be faced with an eviction notice, bad referral or any other legal ramifications for trying to keep it hush-hush.

Gather References. Yes, you read that right. I have actually been asked a number of times to supply written references for my cats from previous landlords and neighbors. You should also get a letter from your vet showing that your pet's shots are up to date. And if your dog has been to training classes bring that documentation as well. If you have a prior landlord that says your animal didn't cause any property damage and the neighbors gave them the thumbs up, nine times out of ten you'll be good as gold.

Introduce Your Pet. This tip I would take with a grain of salt. Not all animals are well behaved 100% of the time and some animals need a bit of courting time before showing their true colors. But if you have a great pet that will melt the landlords heart than use it to your advantage.

Show That You Are Responsible. Because pet owners have a harder time finding a place to live, they often make great tenants and stay put longer. Don't be afraid to discuss that with your potential landlord.

Propose a Trial Period. If the landlord is on the fence about it you might be able to push them over the edge by suggesting a short term trial period where they can observe how the animal is getting along in the space and then you can re-negotaite your contract.

Get it in Writing. You often will have to pay a bit extra and throw down a pet security deposit when signing your lease. Just make sure all the terms that were discussed and agreed upon concerning your pet have been written up clearly before signing.

I am currently a student at UBC in the Applied Animal Biology program and hope to graduate with a degree in animal welfare. I also volunteer with VOKRA taking care of the feral cats living at the Barn Sanctuary as well as helping out with the kittens and new moms at VOKRA's main shelter. I've always had a soft spot for cats and kittens and have had quite the pride in the past, and even now. I've recently added a tabby kitten to my brood by the name of Astro. She enjoys bugging my two 5 year old feral rescues (Pinnie and Scary) who patiently put up with her and can occaisionally be caught sneaking in a snuggle with her. Pinnie is a beautiul medium-haired lynx flame point (or so I'm told she is called) with blue eyes and her brother Scary is a handsome solid black medium-hair with beatiful green eyes.

Why Clay Clumping Cat Litter is Evil!

One major fact that isn't readily known is that clay cat litter is strip mined. Add to that, clay clumping litter does not biodegrade in landfills.

Clay litter contains silica (a known cancer causing agent when inhaled) and clumping clay litter contains sodium bentonite, which expands to 15 times its original mass and becomes completely insoluble. Think about what that does when your cat grooms itself and the sodium bentonite gets into their digestive system.

Deter Cats from Furniture and Countertops

...just like humans would hate the idea of biting into a ball of tin foil,
cats apparently feel the same way about walking on it. So, how do
you make this work? It's simple:

Place a piece of foil on the area in question and leave it for 2 or 3 days.
Remove the foil and carefully fold it, but don't discard it just yet! You might need it again.
See if your kitty goes back to that spot. This might take a few days or even a week.
If the behavior has stopped, you're done! Recycle the piece of foil and celebrate.
If your cat realizes his favorite sleeping spot if available again, replace the foil and leave it there for a week. Hopefully he will find a new place in the meantime and forget about his old favorite. If he doesn't, you might have to periodically place the foil for a few days or while you're out for the afternoon.

This group is comprised of three private No-Kill animal welfare organizations in Japan; HEART-Tokushima, Animal Friends Niigata and Japan Cat Network. No animal rescued by JEARS will be surrendered to Animal Control (where they would be at risk for euthanasia after three days) under any circumstance. They rescue, reunite and rehome lost and abandoned animals. The original donation link (which was not working when I tried it earlier this morning) can be found here. 2. Support the Animal Refuge Kansai. This organization, which has facilities in Tokyo and Osaka, has set up a fund for their shelters. ARK already has some facilities in place and a team of experienced staff able to deal with traumatized animals. The building of emergency shelters may be needed as well. Says ARK: "We will use our resources and know-how to help as many animals as we can, following this terrible disaster."

3. Send your old (but working!) cell phones to the Animal Miracle Foundation & Network: Many volunteers on the ground in the worst hit areas of Japan don't have phones and need them to effectively communicate with each other. Please make sure the phone works and don't forget to include batteries and any accessories that may come with it. 4. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation is deploying six canine disaster search teams (at the cost of $15,000 a pair) to assist with search and rescue missions. Cat food owners may want to prick up their ears: The pet food brand Wellness is recalling certain cans of cat food.

WellPet, the company that manufactures the high-end kitty chow, issued a voluntary recall this week for its canned cat food over concerns that certain lots may not contain sufficient amounts of thiamine or vitamin B1.

The company urges consumers not to feed their cats Wellness Canned Cat Food (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates of April 14, 2013, through Sept. 30, 2013. The same goes for the Wellness Canned Cat Food Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with best by dates of Nov. 10, 2013, or Nov. 17, 2013.

Cats need thiamine and can become ill if they’re lacking the nutrient for several weeks.

Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop that may include ventriflexion (bending toward the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures.

If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency can be successfully treated..

I came across this great article and had to share it with you. I'm all about making my kitties the happiest they can be. Because our 1 year old son is always wanting to chase after them and "pet" them, which usually involves more tugging at their fur and ears, I've created safe places for our 2 girls. They have their heating pads under warm cozy padded beds in prime locations that are out of reach around the house. This way they are still part of the family but safe from attacks.
We also have a large basket full of toys that they can go to as they wish and help themselves.

Rufus' family are travelling for 4 to 5 months in Europe and can't
take him with them.

Rufus is 11 years old, very affectionate, mild-mannered and loyal. They say
that he often comes to greet them when they walk in the door, just like a
dog! Another thing, he loves being part of the family so isn't really a
loner but more of a social cat.

Rufus was diagnosed with feline diabetes five months ago. He takes very
little insulin twice a day. He gets treats right after and they explain to
him that he needs to take his 'medicine.' It has become routine now.
Otherwise, he is very healthy and physically active, running up stairs and
jumping onto his favourite chair.

They are seeking a caring person or couple who would be willing to take
Rufus into their home and give him the love and attention he requires. His
family are both writers and work from home so he has always had a secure
home environment.

They would arrange to pay for food, medicine, etc. and an agreed-upon
catsitting fee while they're away.

I was very lucky as a child to grow up with an unrestricted access to animals. Dogs, cats, chicken rabbits and cows took up a large portion of my childhood experience. Living on the outskirts of a Polish city the kids, dogs and cats roamed free, grew up together and formed friendships. To my parents’ despair I would befriend all feral cats and expected them all to be fed and taken care of...our yard was a popular kitty hang-out place.
As an adult I am still surrounded by animals. I share my home with two wonderful cats, the sweetest dog imaginable and a cute little hedgehog. I work with both dogs and cats: dog walking, boarding special needs dogs, helping dogs with emotional problems and visiting my feline buddies.

I read this helpful information quoted by Dr. Joosting on the Vancouver Feline Hospital Facebook Page. I really thought it was important to share. I hope you can find some ways to make your aging kitty's life more comfortable here.

Age is NOT a disease; and some changes just go along with life - for example increased tolerance to pain, adaptation to chronic pain, decreased hearing, decreased sense of smell, eye lens thickening, degenerative joint disease, soft tissue aches and pains, that shuffling gait, harder to sit on the loo, harder to get up and around, muscle weakness, muscle loss, decreased ability to digest proteins and vitamins, decreased appetite, forgetfulness....it is a long list. Taking care of an older cat is SO very different from kittens or younger adults. On this discussion we want to add all the things we found made a big difference to quality of life in our older and geriatric cats.

Heating pads - 2 or 3 in favourite social places - on a big soft cushion, set on low, and with a soft fleecy or towel so there is less contact between cat and pad. They lie on them all day, like overcooked happy rags.
Cats are heat freaks, and frail older cats really feel cold all the time.
They won't cook or dehydrate more.

Litter boxes - going bigger, lower and more; we have eventually settled on storage containers - the under-the-bed low kind, and then the big high-sided tote boxes (we cut one side down for access).

Plants - acces to fresh daily catnip and catgrass for nibbles - daily greenery is essential for any cat, but the older ones seem to use it as nausea control.

Arthritis and muscle weakness make it harder to get around - create access pathways that give them small little hops up and down to access furniture, window ledges, beds. They get very depressed stuck on the floow, so being able to still get up high(ish) to snooze helps mental state a lot!

Easier access to food and water - we placed more food and water dishes around, so it is just a step away from snoozy-bed to get a snack and drink; we noticed better food and water intake as a result.

Thomas and Pully have had the same owner since kittenhood and are indoor/outdoor cats 15+ who are used to children. They are LOVELY. Thomas is a short haired ginger male and Pully is a medium haired grey with white bib. Pully is cross eyed! The SPCA will put these cats to sleep if they are not adoptable because of their age and will only be kept at the shelter for a couple of weeks or less. They are a bonded pair and have always been together. This shocking info is not something I would ever have thought I would hear from the owner. I am devastated. Please pass this along to everyone you know just in case someone is interested. These two cats have no idea what is coming and it is breaking my heart to think of how they will feel when they are not in their home. I can't stand it. Please please help.

Cat grass can provide your cat with added fiber to aid in digestion as well as satisfy their craving for vegetation. Just like any mammal, it's very important to encourage your cat to drink lots of water. There are several tips that I've incorporated into my home for my own cats that are very simple and effective.
Water consumption is important to aid in digestion and prevent constipation, flush toxins and waste out of the body and maintain good health. Cats with certain illnesses or on certain types of medication have a higher need for water therefore increasing their consumption, so it's very important to have more than one water source.
If you find your cat likes to drink from the toilet or the running tap they may benefit from a water fountain. There are many different types on the market. Check your local pet store for different models.
It's very important that cats have wet food as part of their diet and adding water to it can increase their water intake. Most cats tolerate this well and seem to enjoy lapping up their wet food.
Placing large bowls of water in different areas of your home also encourages your cat to drink. Cats like clean cold water so be sure to change the water dishes regularly. I find that they also prefer to drink from porcelain/glass dishes rather than plastic. This tends to keep the water cooler.

Dear Cat parents,

My name is Eva. My very first 'real' job in Canada was canvassing for Greenpeace when the big Grey Whales were in peril. That was back in Toronto in 1981. I had been in Canada at this point for a little over two years and I'm sure I got donations from people because my plea to save the Greys was delivered in my very Swiss English.

Perhaps talking about my current crew of kitties will tell you more about me, than what I could say about myself. I grew-up with cats and guinea pigs. I was a dedicated dog walker for neighbours and friends throughout my teenage years. I fostered stray cats pretty well from day one in Canada. My happiest time was when I called 3 sweet 'girl cats' my own. Sadly, only one is still with me. She's a beautiful, soft grey and her name is Molly and she's going on to a healthy 14 years of age. She's been with me since she is 2. She shares the 'stage' with Jake, my funky 'tuxedo cat' boy, who remained with me after having been in my foster care for 6 months, that is now 7 years ago. My life-long companion, my 'oldie' Sophie lived through all stages of renal failure and saying my good-byes to her just days before her 18th birthday was the most heart wrenching experience I ever lived through. It was Sophie who taught me so much about how felines 'hide' their troubles. She taught me to do sub-Q's, she taught me so much about loving our fellow travelers on our planet. Back in 2003 Jake successfully battled hyperactive Thyroidism with radio-active iodine treatment. He's getting on with 14 years and is currently on blood pressure drops, potassium and vitamin B complex supplements and sub-Q fluids to counteract the effects of his failing kidneys. He thrived for many years on a raw diet until he suddenly one day decided he'd rather eat canned food again. He's a charmer and enthusiastically keeps plodding along loving his soup of New Zealand Brushtail stew (yes, I find it difficult to feed fellow animals to cats - they are however, the penultimate carnivore, no veggie diet will work for our feline loved ones!). I have cared for foster bunnies, gerbils, rats, hamsters and birds. All my charitable donations go to local and international animal welfare organizations.

Beside loving my feline friends at home, I find it difficult to resist 'meeting and greeting' dogs at any time. I know more dogs in the neighbourhood than people (of course, I also talk to their parents!). I carry worm from certain death on the sidewalks to the safety in front yards, I liberate bees buzzing against shop windows, I spend 1/2 hour finding a hopefully suitable tree for caterpillars that are stranded in the grass. Some people may think I am a bit over the top with my love for all beings, and that's ok with me. My life is good when I am in the presence of non-human beings, cat, dog, bird, bee, butterfly, yes, and some less popular critters but - they're all my relatives and I love them.

I am finding working 7 days a week sometimes quite challenging so I have decided to integrate my husband David, part time into the fold as well as hiring someone part time prior to Christmas. Some of you have met my husband, while others have cordially accepted him to ensure care of your cats. For my clients not familiar with him, he is as much of a cat person as I am and shares the care and duties of our 4 cats at home. He has a gentle disposition and cats are very drawn to him. He administers SQ fluids to our Abby, as she has had kidney disease for the past year and half. He also medicates her and our other kitty Willy that is ill and requires several types of medications and treatments daily. And of course our cat Finch needs ear drops because he has been plagued with ear problems since he was a kitten. Before this crew we had Spencer who had kidney disease and several other problems for 3 years and both David and I learned a lot in treating him and dealing with his illness. A year and half ago we lost our beloved cat Seal to lymphoma. The last 2 months of his life David and I did palliative care for him at home, which involved getting up every 2 hours throughout the night to feed and medicate him with his feeding tube. David and I shared in doing all of these treatments for our furry kids. So far Kay is healthy and hasn't required any treatments or medications (touch wood!)

Pill Pockets

Pill pockets are a great way to medicate your cat. They can cause a lot less stress and make medication time a treat rather than an unpleasant experience. Most cats seem to like them. They are palatable soft treats with a hole in the centre. You simply place the pill inside and mold the treat around it. I usually give them with a couple other varieties of treats at the same time.

It is a DVD made especially to entertain kitty cats and has been tried and tested on many cats. My own cats love it. It is a DVD consisting of images of rodents, butterflies, birds, fish, etc. with great sound effects. It keeps cats of all ages entertained!

Heated Cat Beds

Most cats seek out warmth but elderly cats and felines suffering from arthritis and joint pain can benefit from heat. When I looked after my veterinarian's cats (Dr. Joosting) I found that she had heated beds around her house for her cats and her cats were in pure bliss so I thought I would try the same at home for my cats. Let me just say they haven't left the beds since we got them! We have 4 cats and 5 heated beds. Our 2 older cats tend to actually be glued to the beds but our 2 younger cats really enjoy them too. You can either buy wellness pet beds, these are sheepskin covered padded beds with built in heat and massage options, or you can just get a feather pillow and put a heating pad on top of it on the lowest setting and cover it with a towel or blanket. We have both and the heating pads tend to be warmer than the wellness beds but our cats enjoy both. Trust me, your cats will love you for it!

Nature's Miracle Cat Litter - This litter was recommended to us by Dr. Joosting at the Vancouver Feline Hospital so we tried it. It's amazing. We have 4 cats and trust me we have tried every kind of litter out there. This one is 100% natural and biodegradable, you can flush it down the toilet and it isn't dusty. It creates hard clumps and quickly absorbs moisture and odours. By far the best! You can get it at Tisol and most pet stores. For multi-cat households it is recommended that you have more than one litter box and boxes without lids. We use the clear plastic rubbermaid storage containers. They work great and you can get them in all sorts of sizes. You can pick those up at your local Home Hardware.
UPDATE** Lately we have been using the World's Best Cat litter and it too is amazing. I would highly recommend either one!
